Network Engineer

Description:

Serves as Network Engineer in a major Federal Security Operations Center. Responsible for: Performs monitoring, troubleshooting, design, analysis, and evaluation of network-centric and security-related systems. Generates and configures automated reports for both technical and management decision-making. Analyzes resource utilization requirements and makes best-practice recommendations for effective and optimal use of existing resources and recommend changes or upgrades based on current and future growth trends.

Assesses, recommends, and implements appropriate alerting and monitoring configurations, assessing impact and severity of infrastructure components. Assists in ITIL-based Capacity and Performance Management efforts, including trend analysis, fault management, and Service Level Management. Supports and assists in the development of rigorous configuration management processes. Assists in the development of appropriate security and policy management efforts, including capabilities assessments, recommendations, and configuration changes. Interfaces with and supports environmental management collection and monitoring efforts.

Assists in the development of concepts of operations; analyzes requirements for network services and network management functions; participates in the development of architectural designs; assists in architectural trade studies; and the development of network system, subsystem, and element specifications. Creates and updates documentation and procedures across spectrum of network engineering responsibilities. Performs general network installation, utilization tracking, node and router configuration, network troubleshooting, and resource growth planning. Performing ongoing risk assessment to improve network operations. Developing and recommending improvements, strategies and solutions using both procedural, technical and policy based techniques. Support day-to-day administration of various network systems including firewalls, IDS, IPS, event aggregation and correlation tools, and network monitoring devices. Solarwinds Orion (and all modules), Trustwave, Splunk, Cisco TACACs, RADIUS, Packeteer Packetshaper, etc. Maintain a motivated, customer focused attitude while operating the SOC on a 7X24X365 basis.

Required Experience and Skills:

2-5 years experience in a Network Operations environment, preferably with a Security Operations focus. Demonstrated knowledge of information network security principles and practices. Hands-on experience operating and administering network systems including intrusion detection systems (IDS), firewalls, Solarwinds Orion, HP Openview, Cisco TACACs, RADIUS, Packeteer Packetshaper, etc. Understanding of advanced network protocols and standards. Experience with network, software, and security architectures. Strong communications skills, both written and oral. Organized, responsive, and highly thorough problem solver. Customer focused – will do whatever it takes to satisfy a customer requirement. At least 1 year experience configuring and using one or more of the following: Solarwinds Orion, Other SolarWinds modules, including LANsurveyor, Cisco TACACs, Cisco routers/switches, RADIUS, Packeteer Packetshaper, 802.1X/NAC, SNMP – upgrade experience to v3 highly desirable. Experience with Federal regulations governing establishment and operations of Trusted Internet Connections (e.g TICAP experience).

Preffered Experience and Skills:

Experience in an operations center for a Federal Trusted Internet Connection Gateway (e.g. TICAP). Thorough understanding of TIC requirements. Experience working in a CND-SP environment as a network engineer, administrator or incident responder.

Preferred Education and/Or Certification:
  • BS in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Security, or a related field.
